There's a saying, "Being able to do anything is the same as being able to do nothing."
I think there's some truth to that.
I think it's a good phrase, a reaction against the generalists of the Showa era. I, too, have aimed to become a specialist.
I've put in a lot of effort in areas where I'm somewhat proficient. However, I haven't yet become a top-notch specialist in any field.
There was a time when I worried that I was only half-hearted in everything I did, seeing my friends studying abroad or becoming professors and achieving great things.
I was just thinking about this while growing plants.
Plants also come in upright and broad-leaved varieties.
Some trees grow straight up like cedar trees, while others, like the one in the Hitachi commercial, spread out widely.
I've come to see it as individuality.
The idea is that if you have a certain level of expertise in each field, you don't need to be a rigid, upright type of person; you can combine that expertise to contribute to clients and customers.
